In Oamaru on November 4 excitement rose over Harbour Board's 250000 borrowing proposal. Polls showed a 45 vote lead, then narrowed to 15 after a later count, with preliminary signs of a narrow carry. Full verification will take several days as papers are checked.
Isabella Glenn, recently at the Metropole St Clair, fined £85 for sly grog selling. John Bowie Arnott storekeeper convicted for sly grog selling, fined £20. Leah Myers pleaded guilty to unlawful sale of beer and whisky without license, fined £75 with month to pay. Comments on Open Bar and local elector views noted.
Wellington November 4. At the Magistrate's Court Archibald John McNeil, labeled habitual criminal and recently escaped from probation at Bell Harm New Plymouth, admitted obtaining money and goods by false pretences. He posed as captain of the Trser liner and obtained £5 from a Wallington restaurant and clothing from a second hand dealer. He was admitted to the Supreme Court for sentence.
Invercargill reports the New Zealand Federated Builders' Association opens its eighth annual conference with 25 delegates from across the colony. The mayor welcomes attendees as the timber trade comes under scrutiny for potential building restrictions and duties on foreign timber. The Arbitration Act is criticized for yielding a leveling effect.

Fat cattle yarding reached 487 head the largest in some time with generally excellent quality though prices fell from the prior market. Steers sold £6 17s 6d to £10 10s, heifers £5 19s to £9 0s 6d, cows £5 7s 6d to £10 2s 6d. Fat sheep yarding normal with prices high for the tight supply and lambs strong. Sheep sold 23s to 26s 6d for good wethers, ewes 20s to 73s, lambs 18s 6d to 20s. Pigs dull with varied prices.
At Burnside stock market in Dunedin on November 4 cattle yards held 223 prime bullocks and breeders with prices ranging from £5 to £10 15s for best bulls and £7 10s to £8 17s 6d for best heifers Sheep yarded 2126 with medium and tight wethers selling from 17s to 19s 6d best lambs to 17s 3d and pigs yarded 83 with suckers 20s to 28s slips 25s to 28s stores 33s to 38s porkers 43s to 48s and baconets 43s to 48s
