At the Southward Coroner's Court on February 8 Dr F J Waldo concluded an inquiry into the death of Edward James Shaw a 40 year old horse dealer from Oakley Place Ole Bent Road who died on February 4 from glanders. Shaw had ill since January 22 with influenza and pneumonia leading to hospital admission. He dealt in shipping horses to Belgium and Rotterdam for human consumption. none of the horses Shaw handled showed glanders. A post mortem and bacteriological cultures confirmed glanders. A disease expert noted glanders is often fatal and can be contracted by breathing the organisms or through skin abrasions. An inspector stated Shaw had not reported glanders and no signs were found among his animals. The coroner noted the rarity of human infection amid widespread equine cases.
