Henry Ward Beecher explains total abstinence using a parable of a dangerous path and a fence in a schoolyard. He argues Christians should not drink to avoid leading others to ruin and emphasizes self restraint for the sake of others.
Sir Henry Thompson recounts years of headaches and rheumatic pain from 1855 to 1875 worsened by alcohol. After trials with Carlsbad remedies, a friend advised water only for six months, curing much pain and rheumatism. At seventy five he tested wine again, finding it injurious and abandoning it.
Mr L. J. Bagnall says the syllabus is broad but allows teacher choice with compulsory and optional subjects. He notes rural schools may emphasize agriculture and nature study, and argues overload comes from teaching methods, not the syllabus, citing three day week schools as evidence students can pass well.

Hastings May 22 Local school children purchase a Union Jack for exchange with Hastings England scholars. The flag will be saluted at Empire Day then sent to the Motherland. The mayor's greetings and views of New Zealand and Hawke’s Bay accompany the flag for school wall adornment. Organized by Mr E Smithurst to promote Imperial sentiment.
The Reserves Committee reports favorably on acquiring Athletic Park Rintoul Street by the council. The eight and three quarter acre native reserve site is leased for sixty three years from 1893 with reevaluation every twenty one years. Last year the company earned £1718 mainly from the Football Union, after maintenance costs. The report was adopted and the council will seek possible freehold ownership. Current rent is £163 per annum and rates last year were £27.
About sixty persons from all employer classes in Gisborne attended a meeting in May 1992 and heard Mr Pryor secretary to the New Zealand Employers Federation. It was unanimously decided to form a local Employers Association and affiliate with the federation.
A May 22 report from Gisborne describes Sir Walle’s property near Taper Satering where Sir Watkins found bones of at least four moa birds on a mountain slope near Huken rangi. The cave remains damp but bones are well preserved, marking the first moa bone discovery in the district.
