The passage recalls Sobrero, an Italian chemist who fifty nine years ago mixed glycerine with strong sulphuric and concentrated nitric acids. The result was nitro glycerin, a violently explosive compound that greatly influenced modern material progress despite the dangers.
The Wakanui Read Board met on Saturday with Chairman G W Leidley re-elected. The annual report notes heavier work, £418 18s 6d spent, £473 12s 8d on roads and works, and a costly stone crushing plant. An English farmer on a three hundred acre estate near Cambridge reports using an Ivel motor for a year and a half. Two labourers are employed at 15s a week to operate the machine, which ploughs seven acres a day through mealtimes.
