Council met Monday night approving rapid agenda items and adjourning to executive session. They prepared for a special election to raise 28000 for city water improvements, discussed macadam road bonds, and considered electricity clock connections while addressing beer peddlers and gar bage bids.
Keys for fire alarm boxes are placed at numerous stores hotels and livery stables in Cookman avenue Main street Bangs Cookman avenues Emory street and other locations. A glass front box will hold keys under each alarm and breaking the glass grants access. False alarms incur fines and imprisonment.
The Medical Society of New Jersey will hold its 127th annual meeting at West End Hotel in Asbury Park starting June 28 for two days. About 200 to 300 delegates, including most leading state doctors, will attend. Arrangements are by Drs Johnson, Mitchell, A A Higgine, T Price, and J Howard Pugh. The society last met in Asbury Park three years ago and in Atlantic City the prior year.
The twenty-fourth annual NJSPA meeting will be held next May in Asbury Park two weeks before the National Editorial Association gathering. Newly elected officers include President Dr Jones of Mount Holly and Vice President George W Harrison of Perth Amboy.
Mail receipts rise daily with carriers doubling routes. Mondays show the sharpest growth as last Monday’s mail weighed just under a quarter ton. Extra manpower assisted on bulky paper packages. Two new carriers joined Thursday, bringing total to seven. Three more planned by July 1 to reach ten for summer.
Dr Henry Mitchell of Asbury Park is named a member of the Asbury Park Board of Health and elected president. The sanitarian is praised for long sanitary work with the State Board of Health and local efforts. The Register notes his courage and preparedness for emergencies and hails Asbury Park for the appointment.
A grand Decoration Day bicycle event at Asbury Park drew an estimated 3 500 spectators. Allen of Point Pleasant won multiple races, Red Bank dominated several events, and the day featured large crowds, notable crashes, soldier spectators, and strong facilities at the Athletic Grounds.
Memorial Day ceremonies in Asbury Park included the unveiling of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument at Grand and Cookman avenues, with Grand Army comrades, veterans, and citizens attending. The event featured a cannon salute, a parade, an educational hall program, and a National Guard honor guard led by General John C. Patterson. Speeches by Jersey City Commander Frank Cole and others urged unity, patriotism, and remembrance of Union defenders, followed by hymns, tableaux, and a coastal flower tribute after the ceremony.
