At a Tuesday council session Senator Bradley condemned Justice Wyckoff over the Chew case and a revolver order, accusing leniency toward a disorderly suspect. The debate highlighted calls for more public police court transparency and stricter handling of city cases.
W N Bartow, cornet soloist of Shannon's Twenty third Regiment Band Brooklyn, is hired to furnish beach music this summer. Season length depends on director agreements but will not be under three months and may extend to four. Music Committee chaired by Kirkbride reports the contract should go to Fred Vons of Newark with twelve men for four weeks at $280 weekly and sixteen men for nine weeks at $375 weekly, totaling $4,495. Kirkbride notes Prof Vera provided good music last year and there was harmony with Council. Several bids omitted for eighteen, sixteen, and twelve men. Councilman Jones supports a longer season even with a smaller band. Capt Minot cites Memorial Day guests at the beach as evidence of demand.
An 11 year old named Tanner, an alligator at the Ashing pier, is kept in a tank under Superintendent Walker due to its peculiar nature. The creature eats two pounds of raw meat weekly, and a prairie dog was later placed with a boardwalk aquarium manager after it died. Nearby beach improvements include a new tower at the pavilion, flagpole flags, and ongoing jetty work to extend the north shore and ready the area for the June bathing season.

Pred Bennett son of Jeremiah Bennett was yesterday sent to Freehold jail charged with forgery. He visited Long Branch and offered a $60.45 check drawn to James A. Bradley and signed Bill Greco at George Soffel's feed store. Soffel alerted Police Captain Layton. Bennett could not post bail and awaits grand jury in October.
The Allenhurst Inn launched its season with a formal opening last Saturday drawing many familiar faces from Newark New York and local communities. A special trolley ran between Asbury Park and Allenhurst to shuttle guests while plans for extended music and longer seasons were debated, including hiring Prof Bartow for a lengthy engagement at 4500.
Officer William B. Rogers was transferred to the beach after a delay. Senator Bradley urged duty last Saturday, but the change occurred on Wednesday. Constable James Canse replaced Rogers uptown as Mayor Ten Broeck authorized the new appointment. Canse is described as having the proper physique and is expected to show a solid record. Straw hats, straw rides and strawberries are ripe.
The mnth serial concert of Firet M E Church choir last Monday night was acclaimed as the finest musical entertainment in Asbury Park. Performances included a boy soprano John Bright Lori of New York City, a male quartet, an organ and piano duet, and Mrs. Peterson’s solo of The Last Hope. Fletcher Hallock impressed with xylophone imitation and banjourine accompaniment plus a ditty Lucky Jim.

Ex-Fire Chief Leggett presented an annual report listing department apparatus including two steamers a hook and ladder truck hose wagon and several thousand feet of hose He urged lowering hydrants monitoring standpipe water and upgrading alarm wiring plus adding five alarm boxes and relocating one or two. He noted cramped rooms at Neptune Engine and A R Cook houses and urged a new engine house and lighter equipment. He criticized skinners idle out of town firefighters and supported limiting company memberships to 50. Senator Bradley lauded the report and thanked the retiring chief.
John W. Chew a patent medicine manufacturer of Barnegat New Jersey was arrested last Saturday night on a charge of disorderly conduct and threatening to shoot Officer George Applegate. He appeared before Justice Wyckoff Sunday morning and was held in $200 bail to await the October grand jury with bondsmen William R. Ham and John W. Robbins.
Fred L Wallace of the University of Pennsylvania second eight won the race against Newark on the Passaic River. The crew earned gold medals. event held under the Panama River Rowing Association. Penn prepared to leave for Poughkeepsie on June 10 with substitutions Wallace Busch and Preston noted.
The Tuesday session covered police and music committee reports. A request to rent a road roller for West Asbury Avenue passed with a requirement that operator live in Asbury Park and return each night. Bids for ash and rubbish removal were opened. Ellsworth White awarded the contract at 3,550 with new rules on vehicle and disposal. Water Commissioner Treat noted coal delivery terms. council declined rider liability for strikes. Sanatorium site study and Deal Lake bridge wiring addressed. sanitation plan under advisement.
O H Brown reports a booming season at Spring Lake outlets with large shipments of furniture carpets bedding and furnishings. Towns near the shore including Allenhurst Elberon Asbury Park Ocean Grove Bradley Beach Avon and nearby areas will receive goods for cottages and hotels notably Mrs Henry Truax's new Shark River hotel. Brown’s extensive stock and regular truck deliveries signal a lively prosperous trade with many local patrons and visitors.
