Monday’s meeting discussed regulating autos and expediting peddler cases with new warrants. City officials debated arrest authority for ordinance violations and the impact of heavy rains on streets and culverts.
Reports from all sections describe extensive crop damage from storm No 5. Marketmen say corn plants cut, fruit trees stripped, hot houses destroyed, and crops in growth rendered unfit for sale. Outbuildings toppled and chimneys scattered across barnyards.
The Common Council passed third reading to grade Heck Street from Cookman to Asbury avenues and authorized the Street Committee to advertise bids and award the contract. Munroe and Sewall avenues grading and graveling were completed and accepted. The council authorized paying contractor William Ford the remaining balance. The Finance Committee to obtain the county clerk’s official back tax certificate. $308.10 to be charged to fire department for engine house surroundings improvements. Theodore Osborn awarded sidewalk contract on South Main Street at Asbury Park water works at 14 cents per square foot. Other bids ranged 14 37, and 15 cents. Audit of ex-tax collector Hubbard’s accounts deemed correct. Mayor authorized to issue $5,000 in notes for three months to anticipate taxes. No appeals for non Trinidad asphalt. Sexton awarded engine house work. Wynkoop & Hubhart awarded Wyoming coal at 2.40 per gross ton for one year. Water Superintendent Coffin’s report filed.
Governor Voorhees will skip the traditional Governor's Day review at Sea Girt this year. He has asked General Cooper of Camden to review the soldiers next Saturday as the Second and Third regiments assemble. The Second prepares to depart for home Saturday morning while the Third arrives to begin a week of encampment.
The Common Council voted to place three waste paper receptacles on selected pavements. Assemblyman Samuel W. Kirkbride suggested the idea, and Mr. Bradley moved to adopt it as an excellent reform initiated after the banana poem incident Monday night.
The surrogate's office filed Monday the inventory of the late Vice President Hobart. It lists personal property at 9,029,041.03 dollars and small real estate holdings. The bulk of the estate consists of railroad industrial and mixing stocks and bonds. appraisers used conservative minimum values.

William Bullock, a colored alayer of Constable James Walsh, Red Bank, was granted a fourth trial by the New Jersey Court of Errors and Appeals in Trenton. The court ruled the previous jury was not a peer jury and evidence biased the jurors, delaying his execution previously set for July 18. Bullock had been convicted of murder in the first degree in earlier trials.
Mary Jackson a Jersey City domestic lost $175 saved money after sitting on a beach at Springwood avenue near Lillagore's pavilion. She sat with her pocketbook in her lap and after rising found the purse missing. Beach patrols Shinn and Chamberlain were alerted and police seek suspicious persons along the boardwalk.
A family on New Jersey avenue at Mt. Carmeway left town early Tuesday, skipping a $200 rent due for the season. A huckster wagon removed their goods, which were later found at a friend's home. Magistrate Dodd ordered attachment to protect the landlord’s claim, with sale if not redeemed.
Queenie Vassar draws attention in Asbury Park for carrying her Boston bull terrier in a basket mounted under the bicycle handlebar. The dog sits snugly beneath Miss Vassar’s control, seeming to enjoy the outing and comfort provided. Tas Datty Journay home delivery offered all summer for a few cents.

He questioned if summer resorts foster more evil than good while praising the religious resorts and Ocean Grove. Rev Dr T B Neeley of Philadelphia discussed the last general conference.

Lucinda A. Poland, wife of housemover Peter Poland, was awarded $5 weekly alimony and $50 counsel fees by Vice Chancellor Stevens in Asbury Park. If unpaid, Poland faces arrest and jail until he pays. The bill cites cruelty and neglect, noting Poland’s alleged control over rental properties and refusal to support his wife and four children.
The remains of Mrs Beulah True Jordan were placed in Mount Prospect cemetery receiving vault awaiting mausoleum completion. Pallbearers included Former Governor George T Werts Col G B M Harvey Richard Stockton former US Senator James Smith Jr Prince Von Auersberg former US Senator Rufus Blodgett Judge Wilbur A Helslay Leo Erdwin G V Deering Thomas P Fay and John R Dos Passos.
Excitement rose in Ocean Grove when stray horses attached to an ice wagon bolted after the driver misjudged a corner on Broadway and New York avenues. The team, belonging to Richard Wilson and led by Henry Gravatt and Jack Selover, ran several blocks before Policeman Hoagland halted them. The wagon sustained minor damage and no injuries were reported.
President and Mrs McKinley plan a ten day stay at the Franklin Murphy cottage on Ocean Avenue Long Branch during August with Senator and Mrs Hanna also slated to visit. The Murphy residence undergoes renovation ahead of the visit and the president is due to arrive August 15.

Long Branch mourns Henry Moss longtime property owner and former New York merchant who died Monday after months with Bright's disease. The 55-year-old had been a summer resident for years and is survived by a widow and two sons.
