A Grand Avenue resident, Misa Ellen R Carey, lay near death as an undertaker traveled from New York to Asbury Park to prepare her body. He found her alive, later confirming her death at eleven pm. Her body was shipped to New York on the noon train.
One hundred sixty properties with 1898 taxes unpaid were sold at township headquarters 47 South Main Street. Magistrate Dodd acted as auctioneer and the township bought most properties for thirty years. Outsiders losing bids included George W. Pittenger Claude V Querin James D Carton Joseph Mc Laughlin Charles Herzog and John Van Dyke. Purchasers will receive township deeds and may possession and rents immediately with a two year redemption period for original owners, who must pay taxes charges costs and twelve percent interest to redeem.
Theodore Beringer begins eight thousand dollar alterations on a Main Street property adjoining the Ocean Palace. He promises to create the finest cigar and tobacco establishment in the state, with show cases costing over seven hundred fifty dollars. Possession expected by early April. His present shop is leased to W H Morris, who will move his candy store there. A new delivery wagon is added and Bradley leases the Asbury pavilion stand known as Beringer’s Bazar for another year.
A New York rumor claims a syndicate of Long Branch summer residents plans to buy Mrs Norman L Munro s Norwood Park estate and erect a large hotel alongside the cottage colony established by the late publisher. The property is valued at about half a million dollars.
The McKinley and Roosevelt Club of Ocean Grove met last night and discussed a proposed Washington trip during inauguration week. There is room for six more in the party. Expenses total $12 covering railroad fare and hotel accommodation.
Captain J Henry Ryno of Company II opened a training session for non commissioned officers. He asked a series of questions and found most answers satisfactory. Examinations will be held biweekly. The Reform Church on Grand Avenue will host a hot turkey supper at the Commercial Hotel on Thursday January 31 from 6 to 9 p.m. Tickets cost 60 cents with 15 cents extra for ice cream.
A reader pleads for real estate expansion and better use of the Asbury Park oceanfront. The letter criticizes current valuation and ownership limits, urges public transfer of beach front, and appeals for capital investment to boost the town’s growth and prosperity.
Charles H Stillwagon of 1080 Summerfield Avenue died at two o'clock this morning after a lingering illness of over a year and a half. A carpenter by trade, he was a member of multiple organizations including the Cor inthian Creedle, K E, Asbury Council, Tecumseh Tribe of Red Men, Pride of the Park Council, Daughters of Liberty, Shepherds of Bethlehem, Carpenters and Joiners Union, and CK Hall Post G A R. He leaves a wife and several children.
Neptune's Engine Company plans a substantial second floor meeting room in the new fire building at Main street and Asbury avenue. The leather covered chairs and solid furniture will make it the finest of its kind in Asbury Park once completed.
The Monmouth Realty Company reports steady demand for cottages of all descriptions. The firm urges owners to lease early, noting daily applications and favorable terms for a six or seven room house in Ocean Grove by the year. Ad requests and location preferences are being recorded, with Asbury, Paris, N. J. cited among areas.
Assemblyman Leon Abbott introduced a bill allowing a divorce for convicted felons after two or more years of imprisonment, arguing it relieves hardship on wives like Mrs Death who would otherwise remain tied to guilty husbands. The bill aims to let innocent wives seek freedom without statutory grounds. The governor announced several state Home for Girls trustees and a sunset election law proposal was rejected as the Legislature adjourned for the week.
John Snyder of 85 South Malin Street broke his ankle when a load of old tin frightened a horse and made it run away this morning. Dr. Kinmonth treated the fracture at Snyder’s restaurant. Abram Schlossbach’s horse also ran away, slashing its right eye, and a nearby farmer named George Van Bruot narrowly avoided a collision when the horse bolted into his carriage on Lake Avenue.
Henry Chamberlain, brother in law to Collector Giffard, presses a vigorous bid for the Republican township clerk nomination. He is distributing cards to win votes, facing George F. Rainear, Ocean Grove Association bookkeeper and cashier, who is expected to receive strong Grove support.
Census bulletin reports Neptuns township population at 14,082 with Asbury Park 4,148 Nep tune City 1,009 and Bradley Beach 902. The game territory population is 8,383.

To raise funds for Asbury Park Public School Library the assembly room will host a 8 o'clock program with fourteen numbers in two parts. High School Orchestra provides music and participants include Ella Kelsey Nellie Treat Mabel Burt Hydrick G T Sanford H Smith R Ross and C Seaman. The event aims to boost juvenile book access amid high demand and limited suitable titles.
Miss H Augusta Foster longtime Ocean Grove teacher and Cranford public school staffer died Monday of pneumonia.
