The tenth annual banquet of the Pioneers Association drew a modest crowd at the Grand Avenue Hotel in Asbury Park. George L. Atkins, the oldest member, presided and urged optimism for Ocean Grove, footbridges over Wesley Lake, and an ocean boulevard while noting deaths of Mrs. Michie Bearmore and David H. Wyckoff.
A large attendance at Neptune Engine Company’s fair raised nearly 150 in receipts. Postmaster John Hubbard won a ton of coal and E C Van Cleaf a barrel of flour. A doll named by Mrs Georges Watts drew many names as entrants for a ring prize. final winner to be decided Saturday night.
Seven trunks attached in Allenhurst in October for W Sanger Pullman’s debts are held. Mrs Garsh B Brassel who claims the trunks belongs to her and Mr Pullman were to appear in Long Branch for trial last Friday but illness caused delay. Trial will occur this week with Mrs Pullman and her sister likely to have trunks opened to determine ownership of contents.
Proposes to repeal war revenue stamps on checks and notes in a bill before Congress. Another page promises documents and articles detailing the tax removal. Also features Steinbach stores offering pictures fancy crockery cabinet pieces and Sterling silver novelties for Christmas gifts.
William Bullock, an Afro American murderer of Red Bank Chief Walsh, who escaped Freehold jail in September, was found near Portsmouth Virginia. Detectives, disguising as hunters, shot Bullock when he tried to flee. he is mortally wounded and in Portsmouth jail. Sheriff seeks $500 reward. requisition papers move Bullock back if alive.
Rev. Dr. H. M. Wharton appeals for funds to support his West Grove orphanage after defamation charges were dismissed. In Lakewood yesterday afternoon the first eleven from Lakewood played the Oreos second team in a football match. Neither side scored as two twenty five minute halves passed. Lakewood outweighed the Oreos but failed to show speed in their plays.
Lupton Brothers, monument dealers of Manasquan and Matawan, have closed a contract with Rev. W. G. Moyer of West Grove to build a granite fence and memorial in his Atlantic family plot. They are also constructing a granite monument for W. H. Pierce and wife. The firm reports numerous contracts already underway.
Dr Bruce Keator of the Board of Trade reports Rep Benjamin Howell slowed by competing cities but pledges to help. The Asbury Park group recalls a five year delay due to funds and notes stronger national finances now allow possible appropriation. After holidays, the Board and Common Council plan a Washington visit to press the project.
The Sea Bright drawbridge construction will be funded by $65,000 in four percent bonds due in six years. American Bridge Company won the contract yesterday and the bridge must be completed by April 15. Freeholders Stevens Buck Thorn and Holmes opposed the project.
The Carpenters Union hosts a cake walk and supper tonight in the Mikado building rooms. Rev. Dr. A G Bale and wife return from west to resume duties at First Presbyterian Church this Sunday. Proceeds from the Asbury Park High School school orchestra entertainment next Monday night go to both the school and public libraries.
The Commissioners of Appeal sit today with notable reductions. W H Buonard of the Reliable Shop sees a $3,000 cut in personal property and $2,000 off real estate while Charles R Zacharias of Western Union Telegraph Co appeals from $8,500 for the Asbury Park line. The case is under advisement.
The Common Council Finance Committee and License Inspector Tindall met again to revise the license ordinance. They reached a classification starting with the letter 8 when adjourned. More sessions will finish the work. Proposals will go to City Solicitor Hawkins for legality before final council action.
