Two men Raymond Penoli and Larry Corsetti were arrested on shoplifting and assault charges after a three block foot chase over fences and a scuffle with Montgomery Ward employees. One suspect maced a worker during the altercation. They were booked and released on bail at Fremont police station.
Four Fremont men among Northern California Shell dealers will donate five cents per gallon on September 20 to the Kidney Foundation of Northern California. Proceeds fund artificial kidney machines for patients who cannot afford them. Participating stations will fly a yellow and black banner “24 Hours to Save a Life” and post similar window signs.
Santa Clara County voters rejected a proposed bus transit system funded by a half cent sales tax. They also turned down two bond issues totaling 56.3 million dollars for hospital facilities parks and general charity needs. The transit defeat was tallied at about 46 3540 to 6 695.
Dr. Timothy F. Leary pleaded innocent to a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor after a 1 year old girl drowned while under LSD influence. He was ordered to stand trial in Municipal Court on December 1, with his attorney planning a writ of prohibition to challenge the ruling on the demurr.

United Nations General Assembly steering committee urged taking up the question of admitting Communist China in the current session. The move follows 14 nation signatures for restoring the lawful rights of the People's Republic of China while criticizing Western quarantine of the Communists. Ambassador Liu Chien opposed the claim of peace and pressed for priority if discussed.
The executive committee of the California Community Action Program Directors Association framed a policy later adopted by 24 NACD directors in San Francisco. The NACD based in Washington represents about 650 anti poverty agencies nationwide and will widely distribute the policy while seeking local endorsements.
North Korean infiltrators in a vessel disguised as a fishing boat fired on a South Korean police launch about 225 miles south of Seoul near Wando. The patrol boat sank. three police officers died instantly and four fishermen were killed as the attackers fled.
Edward Washburn of 38538 Avon Street Fremont is named manager of Fremont Cable Television Inc. He will oversee advertising installation and work from 4510 Williams Street. The city grants a 20 year franchise and home installation is expected to begin by year end.
