California abortion law may be void after court ruling
California faces a potential invalidation of a long standing abortion statute as the State Supreme Court struck down the 19 year old law as unconstitutional while not ruling on the 1968 Therapeutic Abortion Act. The decision said the law was too vague to guide physicians. The case involved Dr Leon Belaus convicted in 1967 of conspiracy to perform an abortion before the amendment. The court said intentional destruction of an embryo is not murder and threw out the conspiracy conviction. Justices Peters Traynor Matthews Tobriner and Bierce signed the ruling.

Flaming Crash Ends Family's Anniversary Plans
A Beechcraft Bonanza crash near Provo Utah killed Dr. Dean Hyde a Beechcraft owner and pilot his son Brent Hyde his wife Paula Wood Hyde and her brother-in-law Steven Ward all Provo residents and BYU students. The group was celebrating a wedding anniversary when engine trouble forced the plane to hit a tree and a power line, exploding in flames near the airport. FAA investigators noted the crash destroyed the craft markings delaying identifications. The three young Provo residents were BYU students. Brent was a sociology senior Paula studied music education and Steven choristery.
