Toll rises as holiday traffic proves deadly nationwide

United Press International tally reports at least 223 deaths from traffic crashes during the Thanksgiving period across the United States. Accidents included a Tennessee home fire killing five children, a fatal Houston area car crash on a rain slicked highway near Elgin Texas, a crash involving Cambodian emigrants, and a fatal light aircraft wreck near John Day Oregon.

Missing man found safe after Wyoming blizzard travel chaos

Seventy nine year old Elmer Connley of Sheridan Wyoming, reported missing after Thanksgiving travel, was found safe at a ranch house fifteen miles west of Sheridan. He had spent the night in his car after veering off the road. Blizzard conditions forced highways closures across Wyoming with over a foot in Casper Mountain and the Big Horns stranding travelers in motels and county jail lodgings.

September Retail Sales Dip 1 Percent

Washington reports September retail sales fell one percent due to weaker auto demand totaling about 3.9 billion dollars in sales. Excluding autos, August and September were nearly flat, while car sales slumped seven percent from August but remained above 1975 levels. overall quarterly sales rose 1 percent versus March-June and 9 percent from 1975.
