New GM pact ends shortest strike in decades

DETROIT UPI. A brief GM labor strike ended after 12 hours when GM and UAW negotiators reached a three-year contract covering 390,000 workers. The pact raises labor costs by about 5.8 billion dollars and includes provisions on job security, health care, and nonunion plants in the South. Union leaders praised the agreement as providing security for members and families.

One Vote Difference Lets Newark Council Keep Seat Open

Newark planning commissioner Marilyn Miller fell one vote short of an appointment to the vacant city council seat after Thursday’s meeting. The council chose to push the seat to a March 8 1977 election to fill the vacancy left by Shamar Abraham with costs shared by the district and college elections.

Hearst freed on 1.5 million bail in California case

Patricia Hearst, 22, was released on 1.5 million bail after appearing in U.S. District Court in San Francisco to await appeal disposition on robbery charges. Oil nations push for oil price hike at OPEC meeting

OPEC experts said to recommend a roughly ten percent oil price increase to offset inflation losses. The 13 member group opened studies in Vienna and will meet December 15 in Doha to set price policy, despite Western warnings that higher prices could spark a global recession.

Majority supports union walkout risk at Fremont high

A student survey shows 60 percent of Fremont high schoolers would join a renewed sick-out over a wage dispute. The school district asked union leaders to state whether they would support student absences, warning districts would lose about 6.2 dollars per student per day and that learning time cannot be replaced.
