Militant Black Group Demands End to Rhodesia Talks
In Geneva the Patriotic Front urged immediate end to the Rhodesia peace conference, calling deadlines set by Mugabe and Nkomo unreasonable. They accused Britain of delaying independence as talks continued with Muzorewa and Sithole seeking black control by late 1977. Separately, Camp Pendleton reported an amphibious carrier overturned during training, killing a Marine and injuring 22 others.

Chile frees political prisoners amid human rights pressure
Chile's military government announced the release of more than 300 political prisoners, with exceptions for those deemed highly dangerous, while promising to free an imprisoned Communist leader if the Soviet Union cancels a scientist's sentence. The move follows President Carter's warning that U.S. aid could be cut if Chile failed to uphold human rights, and comes as the UN General Assembly prepared to condemn Chile.
