Radiation study at Oak Ridge yields mutated crops
Scientists at the University of Tennessee Agricultural Research Laboratory in Oak Ridge report a new program under the Atomic Energy Commission. Research using radiation on farm animals and plants aims to understand radiation effects on reproduction and aging, develop mutations for crops, and seek chestnut blight solutions. The lab, led by Dr. Nathan Hall, uses cattle, hogs, sheep, birds, rabbits, rats, and plants across about 5,000 acres near Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Italy’s motorways push to join world leaders in road growth
Italy has rapidly expanded its motorway network from early 20th century roots to an eight million car era by the 1960s, with 2000 miles open and 1275 miles under construction. By end of 1972 some 4000 miles will be open, linking Milan Rome Naples and more. Costs vary by terrain, congestion remains limited though some urban sections near Milan face crowding. The Autostrada del Sole forms the core north–south spine with west Adriatic and Apennine routes, and non Italian use remains a small share of overall traffic.

Ancient Brazilian cave drawings may predate 5000 years
In Mato Grosso remote caves, about 1,000 miles inland, nearly 40 wall drawings and inscriptions were found near Red Hill in the Formosa range. Ramis Bucair of the Mato Grosso Rock Museum notes some red figures possibly 5,000 years old and others younger, with images of a four foot high bird or animal, a deer like creature, small birds, reptiles, and concentric circles. The art, created with resin and organic binders, awaits formal expedition due to remoteness.
