Court Denies Firm Hearing on Firing
The Supreme Court denied a hearing to Martin Sweets Co of Louisville Kentucky in a sex discrimination case over firing an employee after pregnancy. The Sixth Circuit upheld a 7500 dollar back pay award to Rose M Jacobs, who was executive secretary to the firm's senior VP when she became pregnant in 1972. The company claimed the transfer was temporary and not a firing due to pregnancy. the circuit court noted the high court’s pregnancy exclusion in disability plans does not set broad precedent to remove pregnancy from protection against discriminatory termination.
