A four hour downtown Baltimore blaze destroyed a hotel leaving three residents dead and eighty injured. Police search continued for more victims as firemen investigated the cause. Fifteen of the seventy five guests at the New Sherwood Hotel were unaccounted for.
Washington report notes a CAT system could halve transcript preparation time in court backlogs. In Philadelphia a 20 month test reduced average times from about 3 days to 18, with potential to reach four days on crash basis, though accuracy remains around 96 percent and manual editing is required for errors such as their versus there.

He retires after 44 years with the union, to be succeeded by Douglas A Fraser.
