Senate defeat halts BART salary cut proposal
In Sacramento a Senate panel failed to advance a measure cutting the Bay Area Rapid Transit general manager Frank Herringer’s $68,300 salary and capping top executives pay. The 18 to 20 vote left the plan short of reconsideration. The bill would also limit salaries at BART and tighten oversight by officials in San Francisco and Alameda counties. Separately, two Fremont men waived a retrial in the 1974 murder of Robin Sweeney, with Judge Pulich to decide Montenegro and Webb’s guilt on June 30. Bail set at $76,000 for Montenegro and $40,000 for Webb.

Gas shortages may worsen as pipelines predict lower delivery
The Federal Power Commission said 1977 78 winter gas deliveries by 50 interstate pipelines would total about 169.9 billion cubic feet, 2.9 percent below last winter, with storage slightly ahead but reserves kept for peak use. Curtailments could reach 1.68 trillion cubic feet, about 10 percent below needed supply, as pipelines face tighter winter obligations and regional reliability concerns.
