Washington reports May upturns in consumer prices with nonfood commodities rising 0.4 percent and utilities and services advancing. Gasoline, fuel oil and coal posted about 0.8 percent gains, while fruits and tea declined. Poultry, rice products, fats, nuts, pork and sugar prices rose.
In San Francisco Bay Area last month the U S Bureau of Labor Statistics reported prices rose sharply marking the fifth consecutive month with inflation around 1 2 percent versus April. Coffee beef lamb and frozen shrimp led gains while restaurant meals climbed about 6 0 percent. Fruits and vegetables fell 3 9 percent. The Consumer Price Index stood at 187 7 in May, up 8 3 percent from a year earlier.
Alameda County Water District directors warned Fremont Newark and Union City residents of a 25 percent rate increase this year to offset expected losses from drought conservation. They debated borrowing funds and trimming a 12.9 million dollar budget while focusing on operating and maintaining the distribution system. Future hikes depend on inflation and post drought water use normalization.
In Sacramento the state Toll Bridge Authority gave perfunctory approval to a planned toll increase. The Metropolitan Transportation Commission seeks a nickel rise on the South County bridges and 25 cents on the Bay Bridge. The measure aims to fund maintenance, operations, and bond redemption. Floyd L. Sparks, publisher of The Argus, serves on the authority.
In Fremont a growing split erodes the 3 member pragmatic majority with Mayor Gene Rhodes. Councilman Tony Azevedo faces public rebukes from former campaign allies Jane Bonnet Jim Bray Jan Stillwell Ed Campbell and Ivan Sumich while defections over the elected mayor proposal stir council debate. Azevedo defends his record stressing open mind on charter changes and Mezzetti for mayor while denying backroom deals with Dillon and Lampert.
A fair and warm trend continues through tomorrow with temperatures in the 80s to near 90. Skies stay mostly sunny with a few clouds and light showers possible near the south district. Yesterday's high reached the lower 70s in Fremont, with a low around 68.
After a strong quake, Union City and Newark dispatchers report a surge of calls. Officers reassured frightened residents, with one Newark dispatcher handling at least 78 inquiries in minutes. Typical questions included whether the event was an earthquake and where it originated.
