Rylock Labor Dispute Criticizes Police and Strikers
Rylock management attacks the City Police Department and striking machinists in a three month old labor dispute. Glen Barth, vice president of Aylock, accuses police chief William Kirkpatrick of indifference to violent picketing and criticizes outside militants. The International Association of Machinists Local 1518 began the strike April 1 over a master agreement, with about 80 workers at Rylock’s 1285 Atlantic Ave plant producing aluminum door frames at reduced rates. Barth cites wage and benefit comparisons, defends company wages, and outlines a three year plan to keep the plant open, freeze wages, adjust hiring and benefits, and improve efficiency with new terms for future hires. He notes payroll costs rose sharply and that exact losses from the strike have not yet been determined.
