The primary results list major statewide candidates with ties and no opposition noted. It names winners such as Pukualn Jr and Bartalini among others, and includes district figures like Union Sanitary District candidates Besge and Tomirtaay Wat BD plus totals for several names and Prop 16 nuclear and ACWD water bonds with large vote totals.
Several hundred Fremont teachers gathered before the board of education to denounce salary negotiations as insulting and demoralizing and warned of a fall strike if contracts fail. Pfaffenberger, president of the Fremont Unified District Teachers Association, pledged intensified negotiations and warned labor action could escalate this September. The group noted teachers went a year without a raise, criticizing the board’s offer as insufficient.
Voters in Niles and Decoto Union City approved a 49.67 mil levy by 1716 to 457 to buy out Citizens Utilities Co. ACWD will finance the 1.7 million bond and take over the privately run water firm amid complaints of dirty water. Citizens will gain 2.7 million in interest. residents may save about 900 thousand in interest over two years.
Jimmy Carter secured the Democratic presidential nomination after endorsements from Alabama Governor George Wallace Chicago Mayor Richard Daley and support from Henry Jackson. Hubert Humphrey announced he would not campaign to stop Carter ending his candidacy while Ford Reagan battled for the Republican nod. Carter led with 1240 of 1505 delegates as California New Jersey and Ohio held the final primaries.
Californians approved charity bingo under Prop 9 and senior property tax relief Prop 18 while rejecting two school bond issues Prop 1 and 4. Prop 2 authorized 500 million for Cal-Vet farm and home loans and 175 million for clean water. Prop 15 on nuclear plant safeguards failed narrowly. Other measures altered tax rules for banks corporations and insurers with broad approval for noncontroversial savings and loan deposits.
In a tight runoff race for the county board seat, Raymond edged Murphy with 16 858 votes 31 3 percent while Fremont consumer advocate led with 19 908 votes 20 6 percent and Alves trailed at 18 6 percent. Sulle Saint quit to back Raymond as Murphy accused picketing union members of disrupting polling places.
The Union Sanitary District elected three new board members Tuesday. Newcomer Byron Tomlinson and incumbent Darwin Buffington won seats with high vote counts. former general manager Alwin Searles finished fourth. Other candidates were Ray Taylor Jack Parry Frost and Lemnard Warge Jr, with the district serving Fremont Newark and Union City.
