States face heavy Medicaid penalties over nursing home care
The Department of Health Education and Welfare announced 19 states will lose about 142 million dollars in federal Medicaid funds next month for failing to meet utilization review requirements in nursing homes and other facilities. New York tops penalties at 33 million, followed by California and Pennsylvania. HEW seeks changes to the law and is considering additional penalties for 27 states, including many large totals. The department noted penalties aim to enforce care quality while warning costs will impact elderly and needy patients.
