Utilities clash over water supply in Fremont dispute
Citizens Utilities mails a scare letter to 3200 Niles Decoto area customers claiming Alameda County Water District could charge double if it wins a takeover suit. The letter, signed by general manager Ben Stradley, cites alleged rate hikes and bond costs while ACWD officials dispute the figures. Public hearings set for January and February in Fremont test the dispute as critics call the letter misleading.

Reagan denies quotes at final California news conference
Governor Ronald Reagan, at his farewell state Capital briefing, rejected having said controversial phrases. He disputed the bloodbath and seen one tree, you've seen them all lines, explaining the remarks as misreported or taken out of context. He argued the bloodbath comment targeted administrators, not students, and highlighted his belief that common sense can work in government and wished for a second chance at a proposed program.
