Mowry Avenue Widening to Begin Next Month in Fremont
Fremont moves ahead with a million dollar plus project to widen Mowry Avenue to six lanes from the Nimitz Freeway to Civic Center Drive and install the city’s first synchronized traffic light system linking the BART station and four major shopping areas. The plan includes nine signals on a 1.75 mile stretch, a computer at city hall to coordinate timing, and underground conduits. Federal Urban funds will cover about 880000 or 71.59 percent of the total, with the signals and computer costing roughly 231000. Completion is expected by next fall, with potential expansion to Stevenson and Fremont Boulevards in the works.
