Italy reels as 28 paintings stolen from Milan gallery
A Milan gallery, famed for its five security systems, suffered a daring theft of 28 paintings by Gauguin Van Gogh Renoir and others from the Carlo Grassi collection. Police say the thieves entered through a second floor window and moved through three stairs to a modern wing, taking high value works including two Adrien Van Strecht pieces and 26 modern works. The haul followed a prior Urbino theft of Renaissance masters, prompting fresh alarm over Italy’s museum protections. Authorities report the total value around 45 million. Several suspects were arrested in Urbino for that earlier crime. one released for lack of evidence.
