Free speech threat at UC Berkeley campus seen

The UC Berkeley faculty committee warned free speech is endangered inside and outside classrooms. It will pursue a general inquiry into academic freedom amid intimidation by radicals, noting professors harassed, campuses disrupted, and a ban on political discussion at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. The report cites threats, thwarted lectures, and a need for university-wide repudiation of violence to protect inquiry.

Venezuela to raise oil prices by about 25 percent

Venezuela plans a 25 percent price hike next month for crude sold to the United States, with the new landed price expected around 2.78 dollars per barrel. The move, directed by Caracas, reflects Gulf states' inflation and tax changes but aims to keep U.S. consumer prices stable, per OPEC official Dr J Rafael Macia. The price change follows a separate Gulf effort that boosted posted prices and taxes on oil profits, and Venezuela will set yearly prices rather than inflation-linked scales.
