Union City council envisions adjacent shopping center near BART station
Union City officials received an initial view of a two phase central business district project adjacent to the new Bay Area Rapid Transit station. Developer William Moore outlined a plan including a large supermarket drug store bank and small shops in two wide malls with an Early California motif. Phase one aims to finish this year while phase two with a major department store is set for two years hence. Council members welcomed the plan and urged quick construction. The council also rezoned 5 acres on Alvarado’s Head and 2.5 acres for neighborhood commercial plus multi family housing. Leo Alychis abstained citing a need for a school housing plan before further multi family rezoning. The panel directed staff to pursue all legal steps to demolish the old Dinsmore House in Alyard, citing safety concerns and little interest from the Washington Historical Society.
