Microscopic spheres rain into gulf from industrial pollution
USF scientists report vast numbers of tiny black magnetic spheres are falling into the eastern Gulf of Mexico, likely from coal burning plants and industrial facilities nearby. They estimate up to 650000 tons annually, mostly magnetite with impurities, resembling micrometeorites but sourced to fly ash rather than space or volcanic origins. Spheres collected near Tampa Bay and Tarpon Springs corroborate industrial origin.
