Egypt Says Major Canal Raid Kills and Damages Reported
Egypt claims a major night raid across the Suez Canal killed and wounded tens of Israeli soldiers and damaged positions, while Israel calls it Egyptian bragging. A Cairo spokesman details 130 Egyptian commandos crossing the canal near El Shatt and holding Israeli positions for two hours, with tanks and guns destroyed before Egyptian forces withdrew. Israeli spokesmen dispute the claim, saying the raid was repulsed and five Egyptians were killed, with two two-minute Israeli air attacks reported on the west bank. U.S. official Robert Pranger arrived in Lebanon from Cairo amid the dispute and undisclosed talks with Egyptian leaders.
