Lawmakers push back against the governor by approving a bill to restore funds for emergency inflation measures and local property tax relief. The override faces bipartisan resistance but aims to protect state aid levels and prevent deeper cuts to K through 12 programs.
Two thousand officers walk out after a 6.5 percent city pay raise vote leaving only emergency responders. Firemen join possible walkout backing a 13 percent raise costing $13 million, while city leaders seek an injunction to halt the strike.
Fremont and Newark officials pressed AC Transit to start a dial a ride bus system, seeking board approval at the August 7 meeting. Staff warned the 33 cent tax rate may not cover required buses, while Fremont Newark advisers split on testing fixed routes versus full dial a ride deployment.
Newark officials will reinstate English teacher Ray deGroat immediately pending a school board appeal after a judge ruled the dismissal unlawful. He will resume teaching Sept 3 likely in the reading lab, with administrators stating they will treat him as any other teacher while the appeal proceeds. deGroat welcomed the ruling and hopes to avoid intimidation as he returns to the classroom.
Police raided 38708 Farwell Drive arresting Sheil Anne Bales Carolyn R. Decurly Barbara F. Rabper and Marianne on charges related to prostitution and marijuana. Attorney Michael Hallinan disputes the raid saying the house housed a legal companion service and denies solicitation. Police say an undercover agent was not solicited and marijuana seeds and bags were found during the search.
Stephanie Smith reports on Doug Berger, a 21 year old Union City resident who joined a small group spotting a bright object in July atop Mt Hamilton. Berger alerted Lick Observatory and Marsden confirmed no new comet but Berger gained fame as a possible new discovery during a local rock party.
President Ford told a Des Moines state fair crowd that U.S. grain sales to the Soviet Union will rise and that a hands off policy will let American farmers earn more. He cited 9.8 million tons of Soviet purchases so far and noted continued support for fair prices and farm policy. He toured 4-H exhibits and spoke amid rain and cheers.
Forecast calls for light rain and improving conditions by tonight. Temperatures hover around the same, with highs near 60s and lows in the upper 50s. Fremont reported a high of 74 and a low of 58 yesterday.
