The Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church showcased its annual Obon Festival weekend in Union City with a three day program highlighted by a Bon Dance on Saturday night. More than 200 dancers in traditional kimonos performed, as two dancers in costume were featured in photos. Obon is the Buddhist Memorial Day service expressing gratitude to ancestors and reaffirming dedication to enlightenment through Buddhist practice.

Air crash victim found near Sespe Hot Springs
A light plane crashed while taking photos near Sespe Hot Springs killing one man and injuring three others. John McElheney, 20, Manhattan Beach, was dead on scene. brothers Robert McElheney, 25, Torrance, and James McMahon, 21, Redondo Beach, were in serious condition. A Forest Service helicopter and FAA officials airlifted the rescue team into the canyon 18 miles south of Pyramid Reservoir.
