East returns club ace after winning lead in trials
In both rooms at the British team trials the same sequence led to a slam by the declarer. East’s decision to return the club queen in Room 1 shortened dummy’s trumps and allowed the declarer to cash dummy’s ace. In Room 2 East exited a heart to mislead, forcing the declarer to guess the trump suit with 4-0 breaks, and South failed to guess, losing the slam. East’s accurate anticipation, not luck, decided the outcome.
