Joe Tupper a student at Mission San Jose High School placed third among chalk talk finalists in the 17th annual Polytechnic contest and William C Porth 6 died Sunday after being struck by a car. Funeral services set at Fremont Chapel at California State Polytechnic College in San Luis Obispo.

The district, spanning the San Fernando Valley to the Antelope Valley and into Kern County, has typically favored Republicans, including Goldwater’s father in 1964 and Reagan, who won the governorship and the 1980s Senate race. The seat becomes vacant after U.S. Rep Ed Reinecke’s appointment as lieutenant governor. the lieutenant governor’s office later passed to Robert Finch.
