Death Row author Smith gets life sentence in kidnapping case
San Dieu reports that Death Row author Smyth, convicted of kidnapping and attempted murder of a scamstress, received a life term from Superior Court Judge Gilbert Harelson. The judge denied mental competency requests and noted under California's determinate sentencing law he becomes eligible for parole in 18 years. Smith, who spent years on death row for a 15-year-old cheerleader murder, argued he was mentally present in court. He was paroled in 1971.
