Fremont teachers plan a one day sick-in citing breakdowns in collective bargaining terms. Jim Marchello of FUSDTA said members will use personal leave and inform media to tell parents. District declared impasse. negotiations to be mediated.
A California court ruled Gov. Edmund Brown Jr. must extradite Dennis Banks to South Dakota for sentencing on an assault conviction. Brown vowed to appeal to the California Supreme Court for a definitive ruling, arguing state rights and due process questions. Banks, linked to the 1973 Custer Courthouse protest, fled after bail, now teaches near Sacramento while South Dakota seeks extradition.
Mostly fair weather continues through tomorrow with patchy highs and morning low clouds. Lows will be in the mid 40s to mid 40s and daytime highs in the ds to lower 70s. Winds are westerly about 1 mph in the afternoons and evenings. Yesterday in Fremont high 75, low 48.

Bay Area Rapid Transit District will implement a failure management program to operate trains with malfunctioning cars. Officials led by Bob Gallaway say the goal is to cut passenger delays from slow trains and avoid asking riders to leave a car. An engineering group was appointed to address recurring equipment failures, noting that in many cities a car with a motor loss is handled differently.
U.S. Attorney James L. Browning Jr. said he is considering a run for state attorney general of California. He spoke at a Fremont Republican Assembly meeting, endorsing plea bargaining and the death penalty, and suggesting a jury verdict rule change as a topic of discussion.
