Washington dispatch reports Arcadia charter sued to First National Bank of Arcadia and Treasury authorization to begin operations. President J H Dartle says doors open at 9 a m Monday with broad invitation to locals to bank there. Bank promises ample capital and assured success.
Arcadia police report a surge in stolen cars from Los Angeles. In ten days five Ford touring cars have been recovered here, with owners including Ida H Flaum Ontario Cal Dr Victor Ward Los Angeles BE W Anderson Ventura Cal Walter G French Los Angeles and Howard Garrison Oakland. A city marshal suspects a joy riding gang is at work.
El Monte Gazette reports walnuts in the El Monte section are of good size and quality, but the crop will be about two thirds of normal. Some trees drop nuts. gathering starts in earnest after several days. Prices likely around 30 cents to ensure fair profits as growing and gathering costs rise and labor remains scarce.
In Arcadia on Sunday September 29 morning service at 11 o clock features a sermon on the Fourth Liberty Loan drive. At 8 o clock evening Rev Dr Dudley of the Baptist Pub House of Los Angeles will speak. C E Society meets at 7. A light humor note about Spinster Jane and her dog parrot lamp and cat closes.
Frantic neighborhood rumor spread Friday night as news reached residents of the deaths of Privates Guy Weyland and Bailey Thompson. Explosions were heard but camp officials confirmed dynamite charges used to destroy concrete piers of the old grandstand.
Arcadia Monrovia and Duarte men ages 18 to 21 and 30 to 32 respond to a new draft put in effect. Notaries witness questionnaires as Walter F. Dunn notes exemptions for about nine of ten in 30 to 32 and two of ten in 18 to 21. Married men with dependents seek exemptions while wives await answers.
The Associated Chambers of Commerce of the San Gabriel Valley will hold a meeting on Tuesday October 1 at 6 30 PM at the San Gabriel Country Club. Judge Neely of Claremont is the principal speaker and Senator G W Cartwright will oppose the Single Tax. A full attendance is requested.
City engineer H S Gierlich recommended spending between 99511 and 145,769 on water development and extension. He said the San Gabriel river basin offers a practically inexhaustible supply and proposed pipelines wells and mains to cover all city areas. He urged a mountain water supply for winter use to cut pumping costs and a valuation survey to assess if the plant is operating on a paying basis. The board adjourned with the report under advisement.
An option to convert existing coal furnaces to gas heating using the Reliance Furnace Burner. It promises cheaper heat with natural gas and invites calls to Black 263 for installation details.
Conscious of a world war, the stork delivers only boy babies to Army officers in Arcadia area homes. The first arrived at Colonel’s home weeks ago, the second at Lieut. Clare’s at 312 West White Oak Monrovia, with Capt. Kelly as physician. The third boy came to Mr and Mrs Chesney at 237 East Lime Monrovia.
Colonel W. N. Hensley Jr will depart for Berkeley to pursue aero pilot training for enhanced military education. Major Mack Fleischman will command Arcadia school during Hensley’s several months absence. Mrs Hensley and infant remain in Pasadena then plan to join him in Berkeley. Red Cross collects 25 from Arcadia police sale of confiscated goods. Arcadia school enrollment rises to 121 and work proceeds smoothly.
The Army Balloon school near Pasadena records its first deaths since founding in June after a smoke bomb exploded during practice at Puente El Monte. Pvt. Guy Weyland of Nebraska and Pvt. Dailey Thompson of New York died. Pvt. James Runety was critically injured. Maj. Harris suggested possible enemy involvement as agents tampered with the device. Funeral services were held at Turner Stevens in Pasadena with camp escort and band.
Awards for meritorious work at Camp Merriam were given during a Y M C A reunion in Fish Canyon. Ex campers traveled by auto truck, cooked and ate, sang and shared stories around the camp fire. W M Hollister predicted the fall program would be the department's biggest year.
Arcadia balloon school announces a Mount Wilson branch with 50 men in training under Col. W. N. Hensley. Lieut. A. J. Christie to supervise the new unit as it becomes a permanent setup atop the mountain following prior observations and instruction trips. A sailor, sea sick and pale, bursts into a cabin passage where a scantily clad woman screams, then quips I shall never live to tell.
Fewer drivers are being haled before Judge Horlock as traffic laws gain respect. This week’s list includes Arthur Tetzlaff of Alhambra fined $2 Rh. A. Brown Alhambra $2 and M. Relph Monrovia $2 for imperfect lights. D Bell of the Golden State Stage line between Los Angeles and San Bernardino fined $5 for speeding 30 mph near the new city hall at First avenue and Fallingleaf.
A Pasadena dispatch reports Arcadia’s government balloon school to become the executive headquarters for the army and air division on the Pacific Coast. Arcadia camp will oversee Mather Sacramento March Riverside Rockwell fields with Maj. Max Fleischmann to command. Col. W N Hensley Jr may be promoted and join active service in France after flight training.
Miss Antonette Sabel of Pasadena becomes the second woman appointed by the War Department as a camp music director for the army. She has years of directing experience at Pasadena High School and in summer programs at Arcadia’s army balloon school. She will also work at the Riverside aviation field and will attend a San Francisco conference with Army and Navy song leaders.
Arcadia joins the national effort to raise 315000 in the Fourth Liberty Loan drive with Monrovia and Duarte. J H Bartle chairs the local district committee including Dr W Simms W D Millard Frank McCoy W H Horlock A L Parker Thos Feron and W H Taylor. Bond terms mirror prior issues with payments 10 20 20 and 30 percent and semiannual interest from April 15 1919. Fifty thousand bonds printed ready for shipment.
The Glendora Citrus association through a director committee bought 712 acres at the eastern end of Monctoa avenue near San Jose foothill to establish a laborers colony with sanitary company housing. A school may follow if enough children appear, with homes to be built soon for workers and families.
