Paris dispatch describes a YMCA canteen in a damaged Chateau Thierry house opened within 24 hours of the Germans leaving. Volunteers restore the building, stock provisions, run a busy counter, and serve over 5000 soldiers in one day amid front-line logistics and nightly supply runs.
A Santa Fe train dragged a mail sack through Arcadia depot damaging letters packages and items bound for the balloon school. Cigarettes fountain pens and other goods spilled near Duarte Road as the sack was sucked under the wheels.
A benefit card party will be held at Mrs. H. J. Evans home 234 North Canyon Boulevard in Monrovia on Wednesday afternoon and evening to raise funds for furnishing the U S Army Balloon School clubhouse in Arcadia. Tickets cost 50 cents and proceeds aid the clubhouse project with patronage by interested supporters.
The Liberty Loan State Central Committee announces a "Million Dollar" Tank Victory will tour Southern California cities during the Liberty Loan drive. Publicity Director Harold Janss says the tank, last seen in Los Angeles during the Third Drive, will travel with motorcycle outriders and be fully equipped for the campaign. Arcadia appearance date to be announced, with notable film stars expected to speak from the tank.
The Southern California Goat Owners plan a September 28 gathering at Brookside Park Pasadena. Members will share knowledge about goats and a program features speakers. Badges and baked goods will be available. goat milk ice cream will be served free.
Rhode Island Reds owned by Joseph Fowler of Duarte won multiple top prizes at the Sacramento state fair. Birds earned first cock and pullet prizes, first pen prize, second cock erel prize, and a second sweepstakes. Fowler noted bantams swept all prizes in their class except one.
A Duarte meeting with County Supervisor J. J. Hamilton and J. W. Reagan of the flood control board considered building cobblestone dykes along the San Gabriel river. About $2000 is available, but approval for a Bradbury estate right of way is pending as Louis Bradbury is in Mexico. E. D. Northup said the plan is “working,” though progress remains uncertain.
A Kansas picnic is planned for Saturday September 28 at Sycamore Grove in Los Angeles. The invite invites all who ever lived in Kansas with music greetings from Sunflower State speakers and patriotic songs. Bring a well filled lunch basket and enjoy complimentary coffee. Mose Brown and Pete Smith joke about their wives in a playful exchange.
The city meeting Wednesday night adjourned with Dr. W. Simms absent and W. D. Millard named president pro tem. A report by city engineer H. B. Gierlich on the water situation is due next week and a bond election may be called this fall to fund his recommendations.
Women are urged to sew at City Hall with sessions on Tuesday and Thursday from 4:30 to 6. Six extra workers are needed Tuesday to complete garments due that night. The need is great, work easy, rooms pleasant.
The Co operative Arcadian club hosts a shirt-waist dance on Tuesday September 24 at city hall with Fletcher's orchestra of Pasadena. Guests are welcomed and coat clad men will be fined as the event is strictly shirt-waist. An October balloon dance is planned to honor the balloon school boys.

New schedule sets one way at three cents per mile and round trip at two and a half cents per mile with various mileage based commutations.
