American Sugar Sent to Allies Heavily Favored France Belgium
In the first five months of the year ninety five percent of refined sugar sent from the United States to Allied nations went to France and Belgium. France received about 83 million pounds or seventy two percent while Belgium got nearly 11 million pounds or twenty three percent. Distribution was controlled by rationing organizations in each country and the total Allied sugar export for the period was about 23.71 tons, roughly half shipped in May. The volume was about one half of one percent of U S annual consumption.
