Southern Mail Train Demolished Near Danville

A southbound fast mail train on the Southern Railway plunged from a 75 foot trestle on a sharp curve near Danville Virginia. Nine men were killed and seven injured as four cars plus the express car left the track. Two children nearby escaped serious harm. Rescue teams aided by division clerks noted the damaged but salvageable mail.

Murdered Woman Found in Lake Birmingham

Mollie Williams, about 35, was found dead in East Lake with two bullets in her head. The body showed signs of decomposition and had been in water about sixty hours. Coroner Paris ordered Charles A. Kelley, described as a painter and seen with the woman, held for further investigation.

Man shoots wife in church and wounds self in Wisconsin

In Lacrosse Wisconsin Herman Rossow shot his wife three times at the doorway of a German Lutheran church during services and then shot himself. Mrs Rossow is gravely ill while Rossow is severely wounded but alive. He was arrested and taken to a hospital.

Murdered Officer James Mullin Killed in Birmingham

Police pursue Henry King after Mullin is shot at a barbecue stand on Second Avenue between Twenty sixth and Twenty seventh Streets. King allegedly drew a weapon as Mullin tried to detain him and both fired as they moved, leading to Mullin’s death at the city jail. Police and sheriff’s offices widen manhunt.

Funeral of Mrs William Kernodle

The funeral for Mrs William Kernodle, who died at home from heart failure, was held at 9 30 this morning from her Twentieth and Noble street residence. Rev G L Jenkins officiated, with burial in Edgemont Cemetery. She leaves four children including Fred Kernodle, a Louisville and Nashville railroad engineer, and daughters Birdie Lula and Lillie Kernodle.

Legislation Near Adjournment With Bank Examiner Bill

Montgomery Sept 28 The legislature has three days left and faces major work as both houses met late Saturday and plan to reconvene Tuesday. A pivotal bill to create a state bank examiner office and require frequent bank inspections faces opposition from small bankers but has backing from larger banks and includes an $1800 annual examiner salary. The senate already passed it and it sits in the house adverse calendar awaiting action. The legislature is expected to adjourn Thursday.

Woman killed by train in Dalton Georgia

Mrs. Martha Williams, an elderly white woman, was struck and killed yesterday afternoon by Western and Atlantic passenger train No. 2 in Dalton. The engineer tried to stop the train but could not prevent the fatal impact.
