In a letter to the editor W. L. McOaa argues Anniston needs an effective stock law to protect a central park on Quintard avenue from livestock roaming free. He notes enforcement gaps and low impounding fees, urging a stronger measure to attract investment and improve city aesthetics.
In the City Office of J. M. Ledbetter records show renewed permits for J. W. Jones dwelling on McDonald and Steph lenie streets, McMillian repair on nth street, 7 & Co. bricking at Twelfth street corner and avenue, Martin dwelling on Spruce, Lane repair on Eigh street and Stephen avenue, Britton residence on Seventh, DeArman residence on Tenth, Armentrout residence on avenue, Adair dwelling, Whiteside residence on Quintard, Pine avenue store near Fifteenth and Sixteenth streets, and Flood dwelling at corner avenue and Nineteenth.
The general assembly approved a bill raising per diem for county commissioners nationwide from 250 to 83.00 while mileage rules were unchanged. Calhoun County commissioners, with fixed salaries, already receive 3 per day plus mileage.
Huntsville. J Robert Jones, past exalted ruler of Elk lodge No. 698, has been named district deputy grand exalted ruler for Alabama by Joseph T. Fanning. Jones led Huntsville lodge as its first exalted ruler and has represented it at the last three grand lodge meetings. Try your hand at estimating in The Star's World's Fair contest.
Ans oiston labor groups plan a strong push against a recently reported anti boycott bill. Lee Ferguson, first vice president of the State Federation of Labor, returned from Montgomery and will circulate a petition to Calhoun representatives and senator opposing the measure. The bill is seen as a blow to organized labor.
The Southern Car and Foundry employees will receive pay tomorrow for a period when the plant was shut down. This marks the first payday in two months and a large sum will be distributed. The workers anticipate the day with pleasure.
Governor Odell considered commutation for the Van Vormer brothers who await execution for murdering their uncle Peter Hallenback two years ago. All three are under 30. Five jurors who convicted them oppose the appeal while a minister supports the death penalty. A Columbia county petition with 293 signatures urged no clemency.
An advertisement touts King’s New Life Pills promising relief for indigestion biliousness constipation and other stomach liver and bowel troubles. Claims workers stay on the job night and day and stresses easy pleasant safe and sure relief for 25 cents at West End Drug Store and Miller Drug Co.
Thomas Burns paid 21 shillings for an old hull at Sea wall and, with diver Edward Leahy, uncovered $18,000 in gold coins from a brig named Barberry that sank seventy years ago. Coins mostly Spanish, some stamped Republic del Colombia, dates 1817 and 1824. Burns, once poor, becomes village’s wealthiest man.
Reports say a light frost settled over Calhoun County last night with no heavy damage. The note mentions calm conditions and a light frost, adding that all aboard for St. Lonia.
Soria Sept 18 The foreign office reports that Turks destroyed Kastoria a town 36 miles south of Monastir and massacred about 10 000 inhabitants. The claim prompts grave concern as European public opinion grows bellicose and Bulgaria debates full mobilization while avoiding unrest at home. The war office recalls Bulgarian officers abroad.
Mr. J. M. Mather has returned from Chicago after several months away on business. He was injured in an automobile accident and spent time in a hospital but has fully recovered. He purchased a handsome automobile during the trip, which will arrive in a few days, and friends are glad of his recovery.
The Douglase Safe bank at Douglass Oklahoma was robbed last night with dynamite. The thieves escaped and a posse is scouring the country for suspects. No injuries reported and the amount stolen exceeds $5,000.
Mrs J Vs Wear died at her Jacksonville home yesterday at noon after a brief illness. The funeral will be held this afternoon with interment in Jacksonville cemetery. She was an aunt of Hor OZ Henderson, mayor of Anviston, and was widely esteemed.
A rural route will be established October 15 at Abel in Cleburne county with one carrier. The route spans 25 square miles and serves 659 people. James Church is named regular carrier and John E. James substitute at Centreville. Postmasters appointed include Massey in Morgan county J O Sheets at Tick Ridge Limestone county William McClure at Hughes John H Hols land and Allen F Whitley as regulars with Jesse Holland and W A Bailey as substitutes for rural carriers at Boaz.
