The Aisne battle rages with five thousand guns in action as German efforts to hold hill positions north of the river continue. British and French forces renew attacks near Soissons while the allies push to cut off General Von Kluck’s German right wing, with deadly fighting on both sides and at three crossings of the Aisne under heavy fire.
Movements to buy a bale of cotton gain momentum across Alabama farms and merchants. Bank officers J T Gardner Jr and W B McKleroy join the effort buying bales at ten cents each, while Coca Cola and hotel interests pledge support. Farmers in Calhoun County struggle financially despite record oats and corn yields and warehouse capacity for thousands of bales.
Columbia, Sept. 17. Mrs Carmack assumed charge of the Columbia Post Staff, succeeding Ex-Post Master John W. Jackson who yesterday handed over duties. Carmack takes over as the new head of the Columbian postal facilities.
Colorado miners inform the president they would accept a three year armistice in the coal strike war. They state they will return to work upon operator acceptance of the plan.
The State Railroad Commission spent most of yesterday hearing petitions from the St. Louis and San Francisco railroad to raise Empire coal rates. The Gadsten Anniston Talladeee district request may be ruled later this week or carried to next week. North Alabama citizens protest the rate hike and remain in Montgomery as the commission reviews the Gadden group case. Chamber of Commerce reports 220 informants from the Anniston area about the local protests and pending decisions.
The report states a $10,000 guaranty payment was arranged, and Spence McFall began duties as assistant to Mrs Carmack in the postoffice. Mr Jackson will be at the office for the next day to assist the new postmaster and her assistant in their duties.
