Calhoun County judge Emmett F Crook rejects any congressional bid. He states he is content as probate judge and will serve his term, noting Calhoun County is his world and he seeks no office beyond his current position.
Vinita Indiana Sept 17. George Nipper once wealthy in Indian Territory reappears in Denver claiming a false name Illiams. He suffered amnesia after paralysis and had been missing for ten years. His wife had collected $1000 from his policy and remarried. Arrangements are made to return him to Claremore to be cared for by his separated wife.
Five persons were seriously injured and three passenger trains on the South Side elevated lines were thrown into a panic after a collision last night. The leading train stopped at Sixty third street station when a compressed air tank cylinder head blew, releasing brakes and sending the car backward into the second train, which then struck the third.
In Birmingham on September 17 the Fourth District Republican convention nominated J. A. Edwards of Talladega to challenge Congressman Sydney J. Bowie. The gathering was presided by Col. W. Special to The Evening Star from Birmingham reports the Republican ticket named at 1 PM includes Governor J A W Smith of Jefferson, Lieutenant Governor C P Lane of Madison, Attorney General W H Armbricht of Mobile, Secretary of State J H Carter of Calhoun, Treasurer H Lee Brown of Conecuh, Auditor T B McNaron of Marshal, Superintendent J A Fonville of Crenshaw, Commissioner T B Hayette of Agriculture and Industries. The convention endorsed Roosevelt for a full term after a hard fight.
Hon. RK. H. Cobb reports that capitalists will visit Anniston to consider locating a brewery cold storage and ice plant. They are looking over the field and many expect Anniston to be chosen if suitable inducements are offered.
Unofficial returns from 36 counties show Garber leading Wilson 5305 to 4792. Wiregrass counties, Wilson strongholds, could narrow Garber’s margin. Dr. Charke Whelan predicts Garber to win by about 2500 overall, including 1100 in Jefferson County with Birmingham precincts favoring him.
Western Union Telegraph officials led by Brooks Barclay and Bristol passed through the city last night en route to Atlanta from Birmingham. The group rode a private car to inspect offices and lines across the southern division as J. M. Stephens and Rafford accompanied them.
Memphis Sept 17 David Blackburn a Tipton county planter placed a revolver to his head and fired three bullets ending his life. He had killed a man named Griggs years earlier and was acquitted but the memory weighed heavily on him.
An old advertisement promotes Cascarets Candy Cathartic with C C C branding and a warning against fraud. It notes druggists sell for 10 cents. Also requests a medium size iron safe and advertises Warter's Havana Made cigars as the only five cent cigar of quality.
The U S Department of State asked the Mexican embassy in Washington to use its influence to protect Mr and Mrs Morgan and Miss Linney residents of Plainfield Indiana and missionaries at Cotovoi Mexico Threats against their lives were reported with a deadline to leave by tomorrow The embassy forwarded the request to Mexican authorities for action to ensure their safety
