Ralph H. Upson, a young aviator, piloted the new War Department dirigible for 330 miles from Chicago to Akron, Ohio. He previously served on the Mexican border as a scout for the Ohio Field Battery and operated kite balloons over Mexican forces.
Roy M. Reach of Birmingham a private in the second regiment Alabama brigade faced a military court trial on a charge of assaulting Lieutenant Sid Cowan during a Birmingham street fight last month. The findings await southeastern department approval, with Roach and Virgil T Roach facing civil court action in a separate case. The Alabama brigade, en route to Camp Wheeler, undergoes drills and rifle practice while awaiting orders, expected early this week.
In Sacramento Calif representatives from fifty eight county councils of defense meet at the state capitol by Governor W D Stephens call to plan continued war preparedness. The two day session will address farm production warehouse protection farm loan system and better coordination between state and county officials.
The second squadron of the 1st Alabama Cavalry will move from Montgomery to Macon early in the week to prepare the remount station near Camp Wheeler. Commanded by Major B L Anderson, it includes Troops K F G H from Dothan Montgomery Elba and Mobile totaling about 450 men.
Major General Treat orders officers to survey the countryside around Camp Sheridan for trench sites and barbed wire areas as the Ohio division prepares for an advanced training program behind the firing line. Incoming reserve officers from Chillicothe and Fort McPherson will assist regiments and place under colonels as movement progresses.
Montgomery Sept 10 Special Birmingham's rate case against Southern Bell for Birmingham service goes to the Public Service Commission on November 1. City and company attorneys agreed to the date and will present the Birmingham plant during the hearing. The initial session will last several days as the company builds a thorough record for other hearings.
The state highway department announces that Bullock Calhoun Escambia Covington Pike Dale and Russell counties will each receive ten thousand dollars from the federal government and match with equal funds. Total road work is set at 140000 for the next year with ten to fifteen additional projects in development.
