A destructive fire last night damaged the Qnifer furnace plant. The blaze started by a torch lamp destroyed housing, the elevator, and a large quantity of coke at the Wo stock facilities.
A destructive blaze at Jenifer furnace, located about 12 miles south of Anniston, started around six o clock when a torch lamp reignited in the stock house. The old and new stock were burned, the coke stock desiccated, and the work portion of the elevator and railroad trestles were damaged. Losses run into thousands, threatening temporary shutdowns though the plant is expected to be braced quickly. W H Weller is president of the Jenifer Furnace Co. and J K Mil led news of the fire to Anniston.
The Anniston Building company buys a block south of St Michael's church bounded by Sixteenth Seventeenth Cobb and Stephens streets for frame homes for white residents. The firm plans nearby lots for houses for colored people and owns land in South Anniston Oxanna and east of Noble Street. Purchasers may pay from five dollars monthly until reaching the value, then continue monthly payments at eight percent interest.
News from San Antonio reports a bread riot at Puru and Rio Michecan in Mexico on October 28 where twenty people were wounded and some fatally. A months long corn famine and a government duty removal on imported corn from the United States are cited as relief measures amid suspicions of price inflation by speculators.
In Morgan Counties scattered lines warn of approaching forces. The report notes civilian vigilance and local preparations as rumors spread across communities.
A deal closed in Decatur Alabama with Rudolph Gertsman of Bremen Ohio purchasing nearly five thousand acres in Morgan and Calhoun counties at about $3 per acre. The land, mostly woodland, will be divided into 40 acre farms settled by Germans Swiss and French farmers heading to America. Pear and grape culture tomatoes and various fruits and flowers will be cultivated.
Despite no local plant, a housing project is urged to attract workers and enable city development. Promoters urge financiers to back the enterprise through Lecke, Mountain & Co. real estate offices, which will handle information and organizing efforts.
The Anniston Yarn mill is now in operation with the first yarn turned out yesterday afternoon. Today the plant runs smoothly though a full force of operatives has not yet been secured. it is expected to operate at full capacity soon.
Mr. A. E. Noble returned from Birmingham this morning along with Capt. W. H. McKleroy and Mr. J. Levi, all noted to have traveled to Birmingham.
The riot is attributed to speculators cornering the corn supply, driving prices and provoking unrest. Local authorities reported the cause as manipulation of the market by those controlling corn stocks.
Probate Judge B F Crook joined two couples in marriage at his Leighton avenue home last night. At 6 30 Mr H M Cockrell and Miss Beulah Y White, both of this city, wed. At 11 o clock Claude T Robinson and Miss Olie Crow were married. Robinson is city electrician and driver for Daniel Tyler Hose company.
A fire and accident occurred at 2:45 PM near Leighton Avenue with partial dwelling damage to Dr. W. A. Smith’s home. At Twelfth and Gurnee streets the hose reel overturned while turning to the alarm injuring driver Claude Robinson, who suffers a broken rib and internal injuries, and volunteers J. A. Turner and Lovie Cooper escaped injury. Robinson received medical care at Gee Kell’s residence before the hose was reattached and Cooper drove the reel back to the fire scene.
A chaotic blaze trapped residents as firefighters dragged sleeping victims to safety. The scene highlighted dangers of delayed medical care and smoke hazards. Dr. King’s New Discovery for Consumption is advertised as protective against throat and chest ailments, with trial bottles offered by McElreath Drug Co.
Tonight on the Midway labor unions plan a large turnout for a grand torch light parade. The procession forms at 7 at city hall with torches carried by all. Judge Stanley of Birmingham will speak inside the grounds after the parade reaches it.
The carnival draws 1800 to 2000 people as the Midway buzzes with bustle and crowds. Speedy and Thompson thrill spectators while attractions run smoothly. Children and locals fill streets as The Streets of India and The Statue Turning to Life captivate attendees.
