Plans at Camp MacClellan harmonize chaplains Y M C A workers and Anniston pastors to serve soldiers. A committee led by W S S Graham approves resolutions recognizing chaplains as leaders and prioritizing union services, open church access, and collaboration to avoid friction.
Washington reports rapid wartime buildup as bond drives and censorship blend with recess. About a million U S troops, a seasoned force in France, and a powerful Atlantic fleet highlight unprecedented mobilization. Half a million more to be drafted before spring, with Navy drills of 90 600 in 20 camps and 250 000 sailors aboard ships.
Montgomery reports that eight sergeants first class and six privates first class of the Alabama National Guard are ordered to Camp Wheeler to muster into the national army. Three cases were tried in county court before Judge Thos. W. Coleman Jr. Two convictions followed. Amy Owens faced assault charges and was found not guilty for want of evidence. Will Poore received three months hard labor for violation of the prohibition laws with a $50 fine and costs. the hard labor was suspended. Will McNeel, rounded up at Blue Mountain on a similar charge, was convicted and given three months hard labor and a $100 fine plus costs.
Discharges and transfers noted as Private F J Post, 113th Infantry, returns home to Elizabeth New Jersey. L L Thomas, inspection staff, to 1100 Quintard Ave. Lieut Edgar Creighton of the 11th Field Artillery NHS recovering from a nervous attack. Dentists establish office in former adjutant's room with LT Benton Glen Ridge NJ DL Dunlap East Orange NJ LT Cassedy South Orange NJ Lieut Huff South Orange NJ New Jersey plans to run excursion trains to visit Camp McClellan. Mrs Marvin Lilly arrives at 1100 Quintard Ave with Lt Lilly in Anniston. Lilly is a Montrealian Banthean.
The First Battalion commander Major John W. Desmond, noted for a long military record from Spanish American War service to a current role on Camp McClellan's general court martial board, travels with wife Mrs. Desmond and young Morton to Anniston and is warmly received by locals.
The Sherman family starts a magazine fund to provide a monthly reading option for soldiers at Camp McClellan. Mrs Sherman and Miss Sherman back the effort with support from Anniston ladies. Cayne McClellan is named for coordination as the representative of the American Railway Association along with Major Dulin.
Electrical heaters, Hotpoint theater lamps, and desk and reading lamps advertised. Extension cords made to order, Edison Mazda lamps, and a complete stock of electrics appliances. Anniston Plumbing & Electric Co. advertises on Me4t Street with phone 212.
A charity horse show in Anniston November 2-3 promises a dazzling social highlight with officers from Camp McClellan and Birmingham, Montgomery leaders attending. The program lists extensive classes from artillery mounts to jumpers, mule teams, and obstacle contests, with prizes donated by local merchants for Red Cross support.
The 113th Infantry of the Twenty-ninth Division at Camp McClellan promoted several privates to non-commissioned ranks on Saturday. Sergeants include Fred A. and Dan J. McGill in headquarters, Russell F. Black in the supply company, with a list of corporals across Companies B E I and headquarters detailing names such as A J Heslen Robert McCullough Harold Drake Joan R Howard Howard Ellis Robert Layderr Otto Lechleriner Paul Willetts James A Savadge Frank Zacharella WM L Young James McCarthy Edward McDonald George C Prassen A B Jenkins Frank Hess and William Mulligan.
During September the camp men consumed 333684 pounds of beef. The meat arrives frozen in refrigerator cars from Chicago and St Louis packing houses and must be thawed before cutting.
Soldiers at Camp McClellan plan a nature study club with lectures by Dr. W. Daughette and Y M C A backing. The camp also expands English classes for foreign-born soldiers and fields a promising Battery C 112th Field Artillery basketball and football team with experienced leaders from Georgetown University and other colleges.
