New York reports great loss of life in Manila as 500 Bolo rebels strike 46 men of the Ninth Infantry at Bangajon on the Gan dara river. Ten Americans killed, six wounded, the remainder arrive to rout the Bolomen. Gen. Smith moves with two gunboats toward the scene.
In Birmingham on October 18 Gov. Jelks and Col. Knox spoke at the Jefferson Theater before about fifteen hundred people. Knox urged voters to decide on Alabama’s new constitution, arguing for white supremacy by law and warning of political power shifts since the Civil War.
Roosevelt dinner with Booker T. Washington prompts mixed reaction among Southern lawmakers who fear shifts in loyalties and oppose perceived negro influence. meanwhile the North Alabama Presbytery Woman’s Foreign Missionary Union concludes its annual meeting with elected officers and reports of progress.
In city court late yesterday and this morning, Hurley Vinson was found guilty of grand larceny, John Bobo was found not guilty of assault with a weapon, Bramley Hays and Carter had perjury indictments squashed as offenses against the United States. Crow and Rempson received bail forfeiture. Cook convicted of forgery. Roberta convicted in two burglary cases. Barker charged with assault with a weapon. Ferrell charged with pointing a pistol. Street v Kilgore yielded judgment for defendant. Williams v Allgood upheld plaintiff’s claim for six dollars and costs on appeal bond.
In this county court session John Jebeles and John Antonio waived examination on charges of keeping stores open on Sundays. Judge Crook bound them over to await action by the city court grand jury. Also a help-wanted note for waist and skirt hands at Madame Carrie FE Wright on Eleventh street.
In Indianapolis on October 18 Joseph Weishiser a 60 year old widower courted Minnie Emory 22 in Tipton county. They agreed to elope but were overtaken by the daughter on a bicycle causing a delay in their plans. The daughter vows to care for her father and will not permit him to wed. Tipton county rumor says the aged man may outwit his daughter to claim his bride elect.
The American board secretary says a Mr Togram of Binclair Wisconsin offers to join ten donors paying 50 000 to finish the ransom. Rev T DeWitt Talmage of Washington telegrams offering to be among fifty at 1000 each to complete the fund. Also mention of a kidney remedy advertisement.
