Wellborn Named Chairman of Atlanta Federal Reserve Bank

M B Wellborn president of the First National Bank is named Class C director and chairman of the board and federal reserve agent for the Atlanta reserve bank. Anniston and Alabama bankers hail the honor as a credit to the state and anticipate organizing the new institution in Atlanta this month.

Allied forces repulse two German assaults on front

Paris reports two heavy German attacks repelled along the front. In the Koye sector French and Allied troops inflicted large losses and held their line. A second assault near the Argonne forest north of Varennes was checked with German retreat, as reinforcements stabilized Von Kluck's position.

Local farmers hold cotton for ten cents or better

Farmers in Calhoun county plan to store and hold cotton at ten cents per pound or more. Over 1400 bales are in the Farmers' Union Warehouse with only 186 sold. Distressed cotton remains to be sold as chamber and civic groups assist. LaGrange merchants form a ten and a quarter cent day to aid farmers.

Anniston City Council approves Southern Bell contract

City officials in Anniston ratified a four year telephone contract with Southern Bell Telegraph Company drawn up by City Attorney Tate and the company’s attorney Sterne. Mayor Wikle and Bell reps led discussion in executive session as auditor Alonzo Richardson defended the agreement which adds one year to the term and keeps audit reports in city files.
