President and Mrs Roosevelt begin a tour to Panama and Porto Rico with official balls dinners and speeches planned on the Isthmus. A brief Porto Rico stop will show the nation’s friendly interest in that province.
The president will become the first U S leader to land on foreign soil as a guest of a foreign ruler. He sails aboard the battleship Louisiana with cruisers Tennessee and Washington, a six day voyage each way, four days isthmus Panama, one day Porto Rico, totaling about 4317 miles sailed on seas and the Potomac.
President Roosevelt and family sail from Washington to Porto Rico and Panama aboard the Mayflower and then the Louisiana. The voyage aims to study isthmian canal conditions with a quick stop at San Juan as a courtesy. After Colon they meet Panama officials, including President Amastor, as Canal Commission Chairman Shonts prepares further plans.
In Baton Rouge on November 8, Democratic Congressman elect Judge George K. Favrot shot and killed his life long associate Dr. H. H. Aldrich amid a private quarrel. Witnesses crowded the scene opposite the Istrouma hotel as Favrot gave himself up to the sheriff after being arrested in the same building for carrying concealed weapons.
J. T. Harahan is named president of the Illinois Central Railroad, succeeding Stuyvesant Fish. The move is viewed as Harriman finally completing a Atlantic to Pacific railroad chain, linking New York to San Francisco and Portland, and the gulf to the Pacific, with Eastern terminals previously at Kansas City, Omaha, and New Orleans.
President Roosevelt embarks on a slow train tour across the isthmus to La Boca Panama for inspections of the canal terminus and Panama railroad.
