London dispatch reports President Kruger, leading fugitive Pretor ia authorities, fleeing by special train after shells hit the last segment en route to Holland. Gold consignments allegedly sent ahead. Johannesburg described as demoralized with a mass exodus toward the coast as five train loads of fugitives head for safety.
London May 31 report states President Kruger was captured today six miles beyond Pretoria by advancing forces. The overnight rumor places the event as a major development in the campaign with unclear immediate consequences.
The navy department reports that the Oregon arrived in Hong Kong yesterday. Eldridge's market at 14 W. Tenth offers a full stock of meats including beef mutton pork and veal.
An early morning robbery and shooting occurred when a highwayman held up Mr. Leach and fired. Burglars entered the rooms of Willie Davis at Eleventh Street and Atlanta Avenue, stealing 30 dollars from her trunk while she was away cooking for the Nonnemacher family.
London reports Pretoria is in British hands after Gen. Roberts accepted terms of surrender. The news reached London last night and caused wild reaction today as the capital of the Transvaal Republic changes hands.
Assistant Supervisor J. K. Jones arrives from Brompton to direct the city and county census. Enumerators meet to study duties. city workers start tomorrow morning and aim to finish within fifteen days while rural districts complete in thirty. Beat assignments include Mrs. Tabb, Miss McClerkin, Rev. Barnard, J. K. Jones, Rev. Johnson, A. T. Hanna, Mrs. A. J. Adair, T. W. Massey, A. B. Williams, Edward and Seaman in various wards and towns.
A burglar unlocked the room door and trunk without damaging the lock. The incident was reported to police and investigated by officers Hamilton and LeGran, on duty at the time. No arrests have been made and no trace clues were found.
A daring highway robbery occurred near the Twine mill last night around 10 o clock. G. W. Leach was held up and shot by a Negro highwayman who presented a pistol during the incident. The motive and current condition were not disclosed in the report.
Mr Leach handed over $1.10 and a pistol was fired at him as he fled. The gunman struck Leach in the back and left shoulder but he survived. George Erwin aided the alarm at the mill and vanished. Police found no trace of the highwayman. Leach was taken home and treated. he is seriously but not fatally wounded. Also a job ad for weekly clothes pressing at $1.00 per month.
London dispatches claim Boer forces are dissolving after Pretoria’s fall. Lord Roberts has yet to confirm, but press reports anticipate guerilla actions may continue in parts of the conquered territories while artillery and armor stores remain scarce.
An adjourned Populist state convention in Birmingham named a ticket led by Rev Samuel M Adams probate judge of Chilton county. Forty five delegates attended as they selected candidates for governor secretary of state auditor attorney general treasurer agriculture commissioner and superintendent of education with nominees from Chilton Callman Clay St Clair Elmore Coosa.

Manila dispatch reports insurgents attacked San Miguel in Bulacan province. Five Americans were killed and seven wounded as three companies of the Thirty-fifth volunteer infantry faced the assault. Captain Charles D. Kolbents and two privates are missing. In a separate clash near Silang, attackers killed three members of a moving escort from the Fifth Infantry.
Paddling furnaces in the rolling mill department of the Southern Car and Foundry company started this morning. Other mill departments may begin Saturday or Monday. Kennesaw cigars are worth ten cents, they sell for five.
