A Detroit area plant installs a simple two screen device to separate sand slag and iron from refuse. The machine uses a copper sheet and magnet to pull iron from the waste, producing return on investment. Three plants currently operate in Bessemer Addison Ohio and the current site near the pipe shops plans expansion.
A Star reporter overhears rumors of major developments in Anniston. Claims include a large theater on East Tenth street beside the New Wilmer hotel, modernization of the Noble street theater into a vast business house, a new northeast corner business block at Tenth and Wilmer, and an upscale office building with a modern undertaker’s parlor. Also possible is a tall eight story steel office building on Tenth and Noble and new railroad facilities by the L and N along Noble Street. Rumors persist that these items will soon materialize.
A Black worker at the W. A. Young railroad camp was fatally injured when a hazardous material device misfired during a drill. Several rounds were fired. one failed to explode and was believed to have gone out. The man approached it and died.
Indiana honors Gen Henry W Lawton with a May 30 ceremony in the courthouse grounds. President Roosevelt attended with federal troops and Indiana dignitaries as a statue of Lawton was unveiled amid a large crowd.
Judge Handley ordered former Postmaster J M Ragan and former Registry clerk Frank Roberts transferred to Anniston jail this afternoon. Ragan plans to plead guilty at the earliest court moment and may speak only to the trial judge. Bond for Ragan was set at 7000 dollars, which may be unaffordable.
Federal Judge O R Muandley to hear the case of J M Ragan the defaulting Anniston postmaster after arrival from Pueblo Cole. Frank Roberts the absconding registry clerk remains jailed and seeks to post his 3000 bond this afternoon.
The Anniston postmaster will see pay grow from 2700 to 2800 dollars after July 1, with 56 Alabama offices receiving raises. Birmingham rises to 3700, Mobile to 3500, and Montgomery remains unchanged as other towns from Tuscaloosa to Selma receive step increases up to 3000 dollars.
Nine L and N machinists walked out of local shops after leaders refused to recognize the union and adopt a uniform scale. Foreman Pace said replacements were not yet found and strikers would not be allowed back. Railroad men fear worsened business slack amid possible summer releases.
The Anniston Sunday school teachers association will meet tomorrow afternoon in the primary room at 4 o clock instead of 3 30. Mrs Belt White will teach the advanced lesson and Miss Betty Forbes will teach the primary lesson. All Sunday school workers are invited to attend. The meeting starts promptly at 4.
J M Ragan the defaulting Anniston postmaster was moved from Pueblo Colorado to Jefferson county jail in Birmingham. He is expected to plead guilty and wants a quick sentence beginning now rather than later. He denies disguising as a woman and says Colorado towns viewed him as a desperado.
A mass meeting of union men at the Majestic theater in Birmingham adopts resolutions demanding rein statement of locked out motormen and conductors at the Birmingham Railway Light and Power Company. If not, a general strike of organized and unorganized labor will begin Monday June 3 at noon.
President Castro plans a U S visit to confer with President Roosevelt on binational affairs. He will then travel to European health resorts. Vice President Gomez may act in his absence as Castro resumes power amid a unanimous congressional approval of his acts from 1905 to 1907.
National Decoration Day observed in Anniston with post office and weather station closed. Daniel Tyler post G A R and local citizens laid flowers and planted flags on Civil War and Spanish American War graves at Hillside Cemetery. Rev W B Smead gave the address. Confederate graves were honored as well.
Grand Army of the Republic veterans marched along the Civil War parade route to Arlington Cemetery where 20000 heroes sleep. Colonel James Tanner delivered the principal address. Spanish American War veterans joined the event as monuments were unveiled for Maj. Gen. Joseph Anthony Mower and Maj. Gen. Benjamin Kelly. Government offices and the White House paused operations and flags flew at half mast.
A meeting is in progress this week at the Second Baptist Church in Talladega. Pastor Rev. T. M. Nelson is assisted by Rev. Noah Stephens of Anniston.
An interview with Roberts portrays an 18 to 25 year old man who claims innocence regarding funds. He recalls leaving Anniston over unrelated trouble, denying ties to a mentioned woman, and recounts a Los Angeles carnival incident leading to his arrest. He says he would prefer jail in Birmingham to freedom in Los Angeles and notes he worked as a welder for the Pacific Electric Company earning 3.25 dollars daily. lawyers are retained to fight his case.
Richmond May 29 Three major events opened the seventeenth reunion of United Confederate Veterans in Richmond. A parade of veterans and military led to the unveiling of a bronze monument to Gen J F Stuart the Army of Northern Virginia cavalry leader. Grand crowds filled hotels and homes as trains arrived carrying thousands of veterans and families.
